A Day in the Life of……Pam Marcum, Director of Claims, ALPHA Fund

How long have you been an employee of ACHD/ALPHA Fund?
I left the corporate environment after 19 years and joined ALPHA Fund in October of 2005. It was the best career decision I ever made.

What is your role at ACHD/ALPHA Fund?
I am the Director of Claims. I have a wonderful staff that is committed to serving the needs of our participants and the injured workers.

How did you first get involved in your career?
I had no knowledge about worker’s compensation until I began working for a chiropractor who conducted Defense Qualified Medical Examiner (QME) evaluations. I was the one who typed up all the reports and discussed the cases with the claims adjusters and the defense attorneys. Since I worked in hospitals all through college I decided claims adjusting might be an interesting career. I pursued those interests, which led to my first claims position in 1986.

What is the best part of your job?
I truly love the challenges that each day brings. I enjoy the camaraderie of the organization and being part of such a vibrant organization. Mentoring, coaching and training bring me the greatest rewards.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
The most frustrating aspect of a claims organization is dealing with the inequities, inefficiencies and abuses in the workers’ compensation system. The most challenging yet interesting aspect is just staying up to date on all the new regulations and case law.

What is your favorite hobby outside of work?
I love taking my frustrations out on the tennis court. I have played with the same group of ladies for about 10 years. We enjoy the competition but share lots of laughs as well. I also have a 5 month old puppy Roxy (what was I thinking???) and she demands her daily walks and lots of play time.
