The 2014 ALPHA Fund Participants’ Meeting set an all-time attendance record. The meeting, held in Pasadena this year, showcased a keynote speaker, Dr. Susan Fleming, a thought leader in the field of healthcare workers with disabilities, and a workers’ compensation panel comprised of experts in the field.
As an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Washington State’s School of Nursing, Dr. Fleming is widely recognized for her expertise in assisting disabled students enter the healthcare workforce. She is equally passionate about helping injured and disabled healthcare workers remain active and productive members of the healthcare team. Dr. Fleming has shared her story of becoming a nurse with various groups across the United States as well as internationally. Dr. Fleming inspired the audience with her personal journey to become a nurse. Born missing her left hand, Dr. Fleming’s determination to become a nurse and follow in the footsteps of her great-grandmother, urged the audience to look for opportunities to accommodate injured workers.
Attendees also participated in an interactive Workers’ Compensation Point-Counter Point panel. The panel included, Pam Marcum, Director of Claims, ALPHA Fund, Amber Wiley, Senior Legislative Advocate, ALPHA Fund/ACHD, Kevin Roberts, Esq., Redding Office Managing Partner, Hanna Brophy, and Bailee Rad, Esq., Rowen, Gurvey & Winn. Panelists discussed topics including, workers’ compensation reform, the potential impacts of independent medical review (IMR) and reasons why injured workers seek legal representation. The panel debated additional questions posed by audience members.
