A pair of identical twins, seniors at Steele Canyon High School, were among six volunteers deemed "Healthcare Heroes" by the Grossmont Healthcare District and honored at a lunch Wednesday afternoon at Steele Canyon Golf Course.
Anjelika and Veronika Cannon, 18, were honored by the district for putting in a collective 1,500 hours of volunteer work since 2012 at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. The sisters have worked in several areas of the hospital over the years, including the women's center, several patient floors, the pharmacy and the district's secondhand store in La Mesa called Thrift Corral. The Cannon siblings also help train new junior volunteers.
Other award winners at the luncheon were Dr. David J. Najafi, an eye surgeon; Dr. Andrew Alongi, a retired physician; Michael Dutcher, a parent of adult children with disabilities; and Richard Hart, a retired 38-year Grossmont Union High School District teacher and the first male president of Grossmont Hospital’s auxiliary.
