ACHD’s 2015 Legislative Day was a great success with the highest attendance in many years! ACHD was joined by 48 attendees representing 21 Healthcare Districts and is pleased with such active participation.
Those that attended this year’s event participated in a day of educational sessions, a Legislative Reception, a Keynote address by ACHD’s 2014 Legislator of the Year- Assemblymember Rockey Chavez (R-Oceanside), and meetings with Legislators in the Capitol.
A few highlights of the event are:
- Workers Compensation: Three Workers Compensation experts provided an update on the current state of California’s Workers’ Compensation System. Additionally, the panelists discussed future legislation that will both positively and negatively impact the system.
- Telehealth: Attendees were amazed by the latest advances in telehealth technology as presented by Dr. Randy Smart from Mark Twain Healthcare District. Smart spoke to the newly formed partnership with Dignity Health; the partnership has connected rural California with medical specialists located in the urban areas.
- Advocacy Insights: ACHD’s Executive Director, Kenneth Cohen, discussed ACHD’s Advocacy efforts, and the ACHD Advocacy Team, including the newly hired contract lobbying firm, Hurst, Brooks, Espinosa, LLC, explained the current political climate in Sacramento, outlined budget priorities for the Governor and Legislative Leadership, and reviewed AHCD’s highest priority legislation.
- Communicable Diseases: Attendees participated in a dynamic discussion on communicable disease public policy and how Healthcare Districts can engage in this important public health issue.
Legislative Day Reception:
Several Legislators and their staff enjoyed great conversations with attendees during the reception in the Vines Café at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento. In attendance were Assemblymember Rocky Chavez (R-Oceanside), Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D-San Jose) and Assemblymember Jim Patterson (R-Fresno).
Legislator of the Year:
The festivities continued in the 15th Floor “Capitol View” room, where ACHD’s Board Chair, Samuel ‘Mike’ McCreary, Board President of John C. Fremont Healthcare District and Julie Nygaard, Secretary of the Tri City Healthcare District, introduced and awarded the 2014 Legislator of the Year award to Assemblymember Rockey Chavez (R-Oceanside). The Assemblymember received his award and then spoke about the state of health care in California. Assemblymember Chavez continued by expressing his gratitude to all Healthcare Districts in our state.
New this year:
ACHD and ALPHA Fund staff and Legislative Day attendees had a unique opportunity to meet with several State Agency Departments, including a meeting with Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, Diana Dooley; Chief Deputy Director, Health Care Programs at the Department of Health Care Services, Mari Cantwell; California’s Department of Industrial Relations Director Christine Baker.
ACHD’s Advocacy team is looking forward to continued success in attendee registration and Legislator participation at the 2016 Legislative Day on April 4 & 5, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sacramento.
