Palomar Health’s SART program may quadruple sexual assault survivors served

Palomar Health is taking on a major new role to serve survivors of sexual assault. Beginning May 1 Palomar Health’s Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) will begin working with almost every San Diego County law enforcement agency to provide forensic examinations for adult sexual assault victims. Previously the SART only worked with law enforcement in the North County. The examination by specially trained forensic nurses is the first step in the healing process for survivors and serves as a fact-finding procedure to collect legal evidence to prosecute offenders.

To serve the needs of sexual assault survivors and reduce time for law enforcement, Palomar Health is adding a second exam room to its existing Escondido location, adding a second exam room and shower to its offices in Palomar Medical Center Poway, retrofitting an exam room at the Family Justice Center in downtown San Diego that was previously used only for domestic violence interviews, and is looking to add another location further south. SART will also have two nurses on call, 24/7, to respond to any law enforcement need.
