A Day In The Life Of… Samantha Kesner, Legislative Assistant, ACHD/ALPHA Fund

Samantha's Blog

How long have you been an employee of ACHD/ALPHA Fund?

A little over 2 years, I started as an intern at ACHD in March of 2012.

What is your role at ACHD/ALPHA Fund?

I am the Legislative Assistant at ACHD.  I am the main support for the legislative team, which consists of Amber Wiley and Sheila Johnston. I send out letters of support and opposition on active bills, maintain their calendars so they know when their bills will be heard, and update the active bill folders with amendments and fact sheets. I also am the unofficial editor in the office and enjoy proofing documents and communications for the team. I manage the Twitter and Facebook accounts for ACHD, making sure that we share Healthcare District news, acknowledge current events, and promote ACHD events and active bills.

How did you first get involved in your career?

Shortly before transferring from Cosumnes River College to Sacramento State University, I decided I wanted to earn a degree in Government with a minor in Communications.  I have a passion for writing and learning and wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to make a difference in California’s legislative policies through research and communication.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is getting to learn a variety of things about what legislative advocates do and how legislation is shaped. Since ACHD has a small advocacy team, I get to be involved in many different aspects of the Association. For example: assisting in planning events, scheduling meetings, working on bills, writing blogs, and handling research projects. There is always something new to learn and gain experience with, which keeps me growing and changing professionally.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

The most challenging part of my job is learning all about the politics and players in the Capitol. The rapid turnover means there’s always someone new with a new agenda to meet and network with. Every year there is a different focus on policy and new issue areas to learn about.  It keeps what we do fresh and different every session, but it also means that just when you think you have a handle on things, they change very quickly.

What is your favorite hobby outside of work?

I have been very busy preparing for the birth of my daughter. My husband, Tim, and I are expecting our first child in early January and are very excited to meet her!

Today is my last day before maternity leave, and as such, I am pleased to introduce Michele Ko, ACHD’s Legislative Assistant while I am away.  Feel free to contact Michele, or the Advocacy Team with any questions you may have.
