American Diabetes Month Blog

diabetesThe month of November is American Diabetes Month.  This disease continues to plague thousands of Californians and has risen in recent years due to a variety of factors. The best way to combat the disease is through education and awareness of its causes and how it can be prevented.

According to the American Diabetes Association website:

  • Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
  • Another 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to stop diabetes.

Preventing the most common type, Type 2 diabetes, starts with looking at our individual lifestyle. According to the Mayo Clinic website, there are 5 steps we can all take to prevent this rapidly spreading disease:

  1. Get more physical activity
  2. Get plenty of fiber
  3. Go for whole grains
  4. Lose extra weight
  5. Skip fad diets and just make healthier choices

This month, take time to talk to the people in your communities about diabetes.  Spreading awareness of this disease can help promote health and nutrition, get our communities educated, and put an end to this epidemic.
