Hospitals fear lost revenue

Local hospital executives say they are concerned about looming changes to federal reimbursements that have traditionally helped defray their costs of caring for the poorest of patients.

Federal health reform calls for these payments to be significantly reduced starting on Oct. 1, the first day of the 2014 federal fiscal year.

The new health law also mandates that millions of Americans begin buying health insurance, starting on the first day of 2014, and provides subsidies to families that make up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level. On the same day, the health law expands the number of people who qualify for Medicaid coverage, which is called Medi-Cal in California.
